My Vision For Teaching
It all starts very simply.
Mom says something like “We are going to meet a special teacher today” and the young child goes along, too young to really fully understand that with those words, a different and beautiful journey begins. It becomes a weekly visit where the child learns something more than what the teachers at school share.
Learning to play an instrument, whether it has keys, valves, tubes or strings is the beginning of taking the next step beyond just singing along with a children’s TV show or movie about an ice princess to become a practitioner of the musical arts. It is about learning the language of music and starts with the aural dimension but soon combines with the visual, physical, emotional, intellectual, artistic and spiritual aspects of life into one grand discipline that is music.
With time and effort and a kind and patient guide to help the student along, new knowledge and skills will be gained in a an instrument but so with music in general. New connections will be made in the mind of the student and sounds will start to take on a new meaning. A phone ringing or the kitchen timer ‘ding’ begins to gain a musical dimension.
Through easy or difficult days, I will guide, cheer and encourage you in your study of music even when there are days when practicing seems harder or when improvement seems two steps away instead of one. Our goal each week is to walk away having learned something new, whether it be a little or a lot and to enjoy both your lessons and home practices. We will set goals and work towards them regardless of your learning speed. You will put in the effort that is right for you to achieve those goals and together we will make it all the way to your final recital and a celebration.
